Identifying Adjectives

Wrap up a study of adjectives by having students create colorful character cutouts! Have each student choose a character from a book the class is currently reading. Group together students who choose the same character. Then direct each group member to scan the book for adjectives describing the character and record them on paper. Next, instruct each child to circle seven to ten words that he thinks best describe the character. Then give him three half sheets of light-colored construction paper. On one sheet, have him illustrate and cut out the character's head and arms. On the second sheet, instruct him to draw and cut out the character's feet. Then have him accordion-fold the last sheet six to nine times to make the body. Have the child label each fold with a circled word from his list. After the student staples the head and feet to the body, display the project in the hallway.

Spelling Review

This simple spelling review helps students remember previously tested words. On chart paper, list words from previous tests (one word per student). Spell some of the words incorrectly. Then give each student a sticky note labeled "yes" or "no." Have the child place her note on the chart beside a corresponding word. For example, if her note says "yes," she places it beside a word that's spelled correctly. Check the chart to see that each word is labeled correctly. Then select a few students to correct the misspelled words.

Funny Bunnies

These funny bunnies are just what you need for some creative-writing practice! Challenge students to brainstorm words or phrases that describe bunnies; then list their responses on the board. Instruct each child to write a funny bunny story on a sheet of writing paper, incorporating some of the words from the list. Next, provide each youngster with a copy of the bunny patterns. Direct him to color the bunny parts and cut them out. Have him glue the bunny parts to his writing paper as shown. Invite each child to share his funny bunny story with classmates; then display the stories around the room for all to enjoy!
