Blockbuster Books

Before you add a new book to your classroom library, create a Coming Attractions poster for the book, similar to those that advertise movies at theaters. Purchase (or make) a class supply of tickets. Several days before you place the book in the library, display the poster. Make a Coming Soon announcement, telling something about the book. Give each student a ticket, have her write her name on the back, and then collect all the tickets. Build anticipation by sharing more tidbits about the book each day. On the day you shelve the book, draw one of the tickets to see which lucky reader gets to be the first to read this blockbuster!

Savvy

Sample

The 2009 Newbery Honor winning Savvy, by Ingrid Law, is filled with a cast of quirky characters whose odd adventures mimic our own conflicts and obstacles. Create a chart to make connections and explore relationships in this extraordinary coming-of-age novel. List the characters in one column and make room for a description, their savvy, what problems they face, and what solutions they find. Discuss with students how they might apply these examples to their own real-life dramas!

Rules for Reading

If the usual policy in your classroom is "no hats" or "no gum chewing," institute the For Readers Only exception to the rules. As long as the student is reading in your classroom, allow him to ignore a rule of your choice. Your students won't be able to resist the chance to break the rules!

Serious About Series?

Instead of ordering a class set of the first book in an exciting series, get one copy of the first book and a set of the second book. Read the first book to the class and get ready for them to beg you for more. When they do, let them know that you just happen to have plenty of copies of the second book on hand!
