What Goes Where?

Type: idea

Skill: fractions and decimals

Hang a length of yarn across the board. Label the ends of the line with 0 and 1 as shown. Also label nine clothespins as shown and arrange them on the line. Give each child a clothespin (or a sticky note) labeled with a fraction or a decimal such as 3?4, 1?2, 0.30, 0.25, 2?5, or 2?3 to add to the line. Allow him to remove clothespins from the line to match his fraction’s denominator. For example, if a child is placing 3?4 on the line, allow him to remove clothespins so the line is divided into fourths. Once students get the hang of using the line, move it to your math center!
