Read aloud to students a picture book that contains several examples of cause and effect, such as If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff. Then give each child seven paper strips in each of two different colors. Instruct him to write a cause on one strip and its effect on a different-colored strip and then link the strips together to form a chain. With each additional link, he uses his remaining strips to build on his cause-and-effect story.
