This tip makes it easy for students to remember how to change a mixed number to an improper fraction. Display a poster labeled with the acronym shown and explain what each letter stands for: M for multiply, A for add, and D for denominator. Then, using the example, walk students through each step: multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the denominator the same. When they forget, all you have to say is “Make it MAD!”
